I still don't get it

I tried, really tried, but it's final: I don't get it. I'm fervently hoping for this carneval to end, as it is getting tiring, fast.

Would it have been something substantial, anything wich would have any impact on our lives, there would have been no celebration; had the country liberated itself from a conqueror, the celebrations wouldn't be so lavish, if there were any at all.

Still, the situation seems to be milked for all it's worth, mainly to sell tickets for the olympics.

Since you gave me a trackback on this, I'm obliged to try and answer, in part. First of all, yes, of course the whole thing was overblown (and taken advantage of) by the Athens 2004 org, as it's probably the best smokescreen and media stunt for a last moment ticket sale (I've heard there's a huge number left unsold, but can't find any solid confirmation). Also, sponsors, politicians, journalists and media icons found in that success an infallible way to reassert their egos and fatten their wallets, but you can't blame the football team for that, or the millions of Greeks who were madly celebrating around the world (and will keep celebrating for years to come): they really needed it, and it's a good reason as any. If push comes to shove, I'm sure we can still drive invaders off our land, but I'm glad we don't have to raise arms in order to feel elated and united. For more psychoanalysis on this, I refer you to eve's blog (http://datascape.blogspot.com/2004/07/arxaiolagniaoikogeneiai-koupa.html), as I'm kind of rusty with words right now, and anyway, I'll save them for my blog ;-)
